The Doolin Garden of Matt O'Connell - Plant Nursery and Garden Design
This garden is designed to look very simple, moving around it, you begin to find "hidden" pathways leading to other sections or mini gardens. The main thrust is two long grass runways which meet at a focal point. These are traversed by stone and gravel pathways which lead in and out of other areas. To a certain extent, you could call them show gardens as most of the plants you see are for sale in my nursery. It's good to be able to see mature plants of what you are buying. The garden surrounds an award winning house designed by Shelly McNamara of Grafton Architects (1995). Like the house, the garden is fairly contemporary but has some traditonal hidden sections, such as a circular box hedged area planted with white lillies and roses planted over four arches. Favourites plants are Astrantias, Heucheras, Lysimachias, Euphorbias, Perovskia, Geraniums, Scabiosas, Sisyrinchiums, Daisies and now Roses (the latter I think is an age thing).
At least 90% of the plants in the garden have been propagated and grown outdoors and are for sale. If they flourish in the harsh Doolin weather, what will they do in your garden?

Events in Doolin Garden

Permanent Sculpture Exhibition
The main body of the garden houses a permanent selling exhibition of sculptures by Jerry Cahir. Jerry Cahir is a well known hard working artist born in Ennis Co. Clare. He works under the Japanese ethos Wabi Sabi. Wabi denotes rustic simplicity, freshness and quietness, Sabi is beauty and serenity that comes with age. His materials – wood, steel and stone - are all recycled.
Entry to the sculpture exhibition is free of charge. Donations to the Doolin Coast Guard are always appreciated. Visitors welcome Tuesday – Sunday 10am-6pm.

Scarecrow Competition
Last summer we hosted a screcrow competition at Doolin Garden and Nursery. The theme was 'Doolin Musicla Scarecrows' drawing on the tradition of music in Doolin. First prize went to Judy O'Sullivan for her scarecrow 'Wolfgirl with Whistle.' For photos of this fun even please see our facebook page.

Summer Sculpture Exhibition
During the month of August we had a magnificent sculpture exhibition with over twenty five pieces, many of which remain on display in the garden. It was a great success with lots of visitors and many pieces sold. See below for some highlights and come to visit these sculptures yourself in real life! Artists include: Jerry Cahir, Noreen Ramsay, Susan Cuffe, Brian Hackett, Lewis Goodman and Ank Lauvenberg.

Doolin Garden on TV!
I was delighted to be featured in a segment for Irish TV,  Ireland’s newest and most exciting live digital media platform. Check us out from 1 minute 20 seconds.

I was delighted to be asked to provide the flowers for some weddings this summer. After the storms we had, preparing over thirty table decorations and nineteen button hole pieces wasn't easy but I managed! Last year we even had a bride and groom here on their special day for some photographs.
